"Play it again" - History of gaming and computing in NZ/AUS

Postby kevman3d on Wed Oct 02, 2013 8:55 pm

I just got a response from an email I sent Melanie Swalwell regarding her academic research into historical gaming in Australasia. She asked me if I could get the word out (and I'm sure some of you here would be able to assist) regarding their "Play it again" initiative to compile a database of 80's gaming history in Australia and New Zealand. I've quoted the website's goal here...

Digital games make up a significant but little known chapter in the history of the moving image in Australia and New Zealand. The Popular Memory Archive aims to exhibit some of the significant local games of the 1980s era, and collect documentation from the public in order to remember early games through popular memory.

Seems that there's a few meetings that go on in Aussie surrounding this whole topic. The flinders university blog has a few more posts on this whole project...

I didn't realise that the NZFA have an archive project for classic gaming tech and software - partnered with the "Play it again" project - Interesting and worthwhile if anybodies curious to help out...

I met up with Shane Farrow { NZFA Video Collection Developer and Video Games Project Manager } at a conference held in Melbourne a couple months back. A really nice guy :)

I also met Melanie Swalwell as I had previously supplied her with a substantially large database of Australian written Microbee games as well as for Super-80, Applix 1616 & Dream 6800. I'm not aware of any games/software written for these computer in New Zealand. Apart from listings in Bits & Bytes, is there anywhere else I could find info on NZ written stuff for those computers ?

Thanks,
Alan
