Thrust

Hi

Does anyone remember the game 'Thrust'?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrust_%28video_game%29

I played it first on my Atari 130XE back in 1987 & fell in love with it. Simple graphics, amazing gameplay with gravity, momentum etc

Can currently play on my Android Nexus 5 these versions
- 'Thrust Advance-' GBA version (probably best) - http://www.rgcd.co.uk/2011/04/gameboy-a ... idges.html
- 'Thrust Reloaded' for Android (controls a bit funky) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... full&hl=en
- Thrust BBC Micro version - buggy controls - https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... roid&hl=en
- Thrust Atari 2600 version (surprisingly good!) - http://www.atarihq.com/reviews/2600/thrust.html
- Thrust C64 version - can play but don't. Controls too hard.

If you haven't played it, its worth a go.

One life goal is too learn Z80 assembly & get a port for the ZX81 & perhaps more likely Sega SC3000.

cheers

I've been spending some time playing Thrust for the Commodore 64. My joystick is a P.O.S, which makes it harder. Defaults to going left unless I hold it perfectly straight. I'd love to see a ZX81 port, and I'm going to have to get the 2600 port now!

Also, I know it's a bit off topic, but how do you find the N5? Any little annoyances?

Hehe, I wasn't asked but.... informal phone reviews are my thing (I go through 4 or 5 per year)
Nexus 5: awesome phone! The only things which it gets trumped on: Battery & Camera & no SD. But for the money its great. Native Android, Screen, Speed, Size - all great.

Current review set: LG G3, Sony Z3 compact, iPhone 6+

Now, back to thrust!

Just had a play of the GBA version on my DS. I would agree, probably the best one.

I've been eyeing up the Nexus 5, since my Nexus 4 is failing due to the amount of stress it's had. I've had Nexus phones since the Nexus One. One, S, 4 and maybe 5 soon. Once again, back to Thrust!

The Nexus 5 is a great phone, for the price. The best thing is you get OS updates as soon as Google issues them. Having a replacable battery & microSD would be nice, but overall I really like the phone. Have no complaints whatsoever.

I think the GBA version of Thrust is great as its designed for a handheld, so the controls even on phone emulators fit it perfectly.

As for playing it on an 8 bit, I think from what I have heard the BBC Micro version was the first (& best) version.

The gameplay for Thrust still amazes me.

I have only played the beep version/port but if I remember correctly it was a nice game, good physics, I will probably give the game another go...

And well everyone is talking about phones, has anybody managed to get their hands on a one plus one yet? Just interested to see how people find it :D

One Plus One is easy to get - PBTech and Einfo have them in stock. Very big phone. OS is a little bit buggy for my liking, camera is moderate for my liking, but overall it seems like a nice phone. I almost bought one, but after spending time with one from another guy I know, I didn't. I got the LG G3 instead. Nothing wrong with the One Plus, but in the world of the Sony Z3, LG G3, SGS5 and iPhone 6, it needs to go up a notch.

Now I'm on a Thrust spree.. Playing every single port I can find for old systems!

Just played the ZX port, and it seemed pretty alright. I still dislike that keyboard for gaming though.

Maybe, might it pay to start a cellphone thread under non-vintage computing?

The Atari 8 bit version of Thrust (even though that was the one that got me addicted) on reflection is probably one of the worst.

The worst is the C16 version. Vice emulator (with linux at least) can't handle it (all flickery). I'd be stunned if that is how it played on a real C16/Plus4

I agree, the Speccy version was pretty cool!

I haven't played the Vectrex port, that looks like it might be cool with its native support of vector graphics etc

The C64, Beeb versions visually look & play the best on emulators for the desktop.

The GBA version (for me the best version for mobile) is based on the Atari ST version apparently. Haven't played the ST version so that might be worth a go as well.

One thing I've noticed though - and I don't know if its a technical thing - none of the machines that had a Texas Instruments TMS9928A/TMS9918 video chip have a port (MSX 1 in particular).

Haha, I thought I'd never heard of this game but after watching some gameplay footage I realized I knew it well as Terrafire for DOS-based systems! ...which is a really nice remake if you feel like checking it out - awesome graphics, great physics, fun gameplay. I played the hell out of the shareware version but it looks like the full one has gone freeware. 8)

Sub-Terrania on the Genesis/Megadrive is another good remake/port/rip/whatever. Last I checked my cart didn't work though. :(

Thrust is a real classic budget game from British Telecom's £1.99 label Firebird. Back in the 80's it was a nice pocket money purchase, I have the Spectrum version and I have also played the Amstrad CPC version, both are good and it's fair to say that Thrust was a real steal for the price, many full price games of the time were outshone by it!

Hi

I've started porting Thrust to the TI-99/4a

Here is a youtube clip of current progress (haven't done much on it last few months)

Yes, Thrust, but I only found it just now thru my brother here. He used to play Atari 2600. Anyway, these are spaceship game at classic games arcade right? Let me guess that the other games are Tetris Flash Arcade‎ and Pac Man Classic Arca.

An awesome game is Thrust, I have the Spectrum version and enjoy the timeless playability of it, a true classic if ever there was one. Now I think I will try and track down copies for the Commodore 64 and it's wonderful underrated cousin the Commodore 16 of which I must confess to having rather a weakness for!
