Anyone have an NEC PC88?

by SpidersWeb » Thu Aug 16, 2012 6:54 am

I'm being sent the manual for a 'PC88' and was wondering how much interest there was in it.

Yep. I do. A Couple of varients. I'm keen to get more bits and pieces for them but haven't seen much around.

Cool, well the manual should arrive tomorrow or Monday at worst, will take some photos.

Looked them up, seem like quite cool machines.

bah, it wasn't for the NEC PC88, it's for the IPEX PC88C a compact 1987 XT clone.
So if anyone finds one of those, I have the manual.

Came with MS DOS 3.3, which boots up as "Control Data Systems DOS" - although I didn't make it to the command prompt, by the time it had to load command.com the stuff that grows on them, which I thought I'd cleaned off, clogged the drive head. But at least I know if I clean the donut, they still work, but I'm not sure how useful this OS will be.

Had to clean the drive on the 5150 again, but it's happy again, glad I bought the cleaning diskette.

With the XT Guide to Operations I did get a Diagnostics disk and Exporing your IBM XT, however those disks are in even worse condition (well the media) and I'll have to replace the donuts. Rather than just a mould type growth, these have spots where the surface appears to have popped a little.
